Title : GOLD MINE BELAMBO

Caption : 07/06/2009 - Belambo, MADAGASCAR - The convention is to use a grain of unhulled rice (akotry) as a unit of measure for working out the weight of gold: 1 grain of rice is worth 1500 ariary (55 cents of a euro). 30 grains of rice are therefore equal to 1g. of gold. Some people use 1 wooden match for 1g. In Belambo, a gram of 24-carat gold sells for between 45,000 and 50,000 ariary (16 and 18 euro). The buyers come from the capital, Antananarivo, or Ambatolampy, the neighboring large town. They double the purchase price when they sell on the gold.
