Ethel BROOKS, 47, sociologist and associate professor at Rutgers University in New Jersey. Her research focuses political economy, globalization, social movements, feminist theory, nationalism, urban geographies, post-colonialism. As a Romani American, she has work in particular on the Roma victims of the Holocaust, and the discursive formations of « gypsiness ». She's also a fervent activist and member of the Alliance for the European Roma Institute, a new independent organization with the mission of increasing the self-esteem of Roma and decreasing negative prejudice of the majority towards the Roma by means of arts, culture, history, and media.
« I want to show that Romani culture is not what people see in the news, or in awful TV shows like "My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding". It has a history and a strong living culture with contempory artists, musicians, writers, intellectuals, etc. ». PHOTO Vincent Boisot
